AVOID THESE 6 DESIGN MISTAKES FOR AN AWARD WINNING BATHROOM

The best bathrooms are the perfect combination of comfort, style, and utility. They bring the best functionality into a space that’s typically used on a daily basis and make for an attractive space. In order to climb to the top of the design ladder, however, it’s imperative to steer clear of certain design pitfalls that can hinder your bathroom’s balance. What’s more, if you’re looking to really “wow” and go above and beyond, check out these six top design mistakes that you must avoid.

Mistake #1: Not having a clear plan

The first step in any home remodeling project is to have a well-designed plan in place. Ideas are great, but they will do little for your end goal if they are not properly laid out. Write down exactly what you envision for your new bathroom. This could include needs as well as wants. Then communicate these ideas to the rest of your family or the other people living in your home. It’s crucial that everyone in the household is on board with the design layout before you jump right in so that the end result leaves everyone happy. Things to mention in your initial planning stages include design aesthetic, fixtures, function, finishes, and overall budget. While these things may change, and that is completely normal, having a solid starting point will always lead you down a clearer path.

Mistake #2: Choosing the wrong materials

Your bathroom must have the proper materials in order to both look good and work well on an everyday basis. While you may have your heart set on a certain wallpaper or paint color, it’s important to think about their longevity. Additionally, consider how often you plan to replace the different elements in your bathroom. If you want a long-lasting faucet, it’s best to go with rust-resistant materials like solid brass or carbon fiber. These materials are designed to withstand routine exposure to water and cleaning products, making them perfect for a bathroom setting.

Mistake #3: Improperly planning for storage

In all honesty, we keep a lot of items in the bathroom. From the normal extra rolls of toilet paper to the fresh hand towels, you need space! When laying out your bathroom, think about drawers and cabinetry. You must be able to not only store items in these places, but also have enough space to open them without issue. Think about how you realistically use your bathroom and work backwards.

Mistake #4: Trying to fit too much in a small space

If you can’t expand the bathroom’s square footage, focus on maximizing the space you have. You may long for a double vanity or a vintage wooden cabinet for linen storage. But if your bathroom is small and adding these means you have to squeeze into a yoga pose just to use the shower, you’re not going to be happy in the long run. No matter the size of your bathroom, be sure your design allows for comfortable maneuvering around the space and easy access to all the bathroom’s amenities. Mistake #5: Choosing inadequate lighting

Since the bathroom is where people typically get ready in the morning (clean their faces, apply makeup, etc.) it’s imperative that there be proper lighting to support all activities. Fixtures can be fun, but overhead lights are likely more practical in this room. Consider various light sources at different locations so that your bathroom is adequately lit.

Mistake #6: Forgetting to have fun!

It’s serious business to redesign your bathroom, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have fun with it! Infuse style and playfulness into your space and you’ll instantly feel more excited about your entire space. Bring your own personality into it through color, finishes, and unique fixtures. Whether it’s a bold faucet or a whimsical tile, the bathroom design opportunities are endless. Take it seriously, but seriously… have some fun with your bathroom redesign!
